This is a draft file that contains the up-to-date results of
the research on the genealogy of the Schuler-Eisenbeiss family,
which emigrated from Southern Germany to the U.S.A between 1837
and 1846.
This document does not describe the chronology in which the various
facts have been discovered (that would be an other story).
It contains the information what we know, or better: what we
think to know ...
Pointers to the primary information sources will be added later ....

The Schuler / Eisenbeiss Family
Researcher in Germany: Bernd Schuler
who is a descendant of Jakob Schuler, Dietersweiler, Germany.
Bernd Schuler lives in Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
It was 1763-Aug-30, in a village Dietersweiler (48°27'N,08°28'E)
in the Black Forest near Freudenstadt, Württemberg, Southern Germany,
when Jakob Schuler (born 1741-07-08) married
Anna Catharina Hornberger (born 1741-03-04).
Their 8th child was Johann Adam Schuler (born 1781-02-26).
1789 The French Revolution
1808 The French Emperor Napoleon rules over Europe.
Johann Adam Schuler left Württemberg and married
Anna Luise Eisenbeiss (born 1783-02-13) in Sundheim, Baden, Germany
on 1812-12-26 .
Sundheim (48°33'N,7°50'E) is a village (today part of Kehl) at the river
Rhein (Rhine) near Strassburg.
A map (80Kbyte) shows the area: West Side of
the Rhine is France; the red line sketches the former border between Baden and
Württemberg; the yellow spots mark Sundheim and Dietersweiler (air distance
about 50km ).
Johann Adam called himself Adam.
Anna Luise called herself Luise. Sometimes written French: Louise.
Five of their children grew up:
1. Johann Georg *1813-09-23
2. Luise *1815-09-17
3. Salome *1817-09-21
7. Jacob Friedrich *1826-05-29
8. Carl *1828-08-07
1815 Napoleon is finally defeated.
Baden is now a "Grossherzogtum" (grand duchy)
Württemberg is now a "Königreich" (kingdom)
Until 1871 there will be still no united Germany.
Beside the well known children 4,5,6 there was a pre-conjugal child:
0. Jacob *1808-11-25 died 1810-01-16 (-bg-)
Son Johann Georg married 1837 in St. Louis, Missouri, North America.
Daughter Salome married 1837 in Sundheim (husband: Mr Walter).
Adam died 1840-09-03 in Sundheim.
Daughter Luise married 1841 in Sundheim (husband: Mr Schanz).
Daughters Luise and Salome gave birth to several children in Sundheim.
"Adam Schuler's widow and son" got an emigration permit in 1846.
We still don't know certainly, whether the mother, Anna Luise Schuler,
really emigrated; nor do we know, what was her last living place.
But -bg- found no death record in Sundheim!
The Eisenbeiss families all over the world are rather completely
researched. They will be easily found with web search machines.
An American, H Burnell Schuler (*1881), wrote 1975, 94 years old, about
the family:
Adam Schuler, and wife, L. Eisendeis (sic!), wer the parents of John George,
Fred, Charles and two daughters. The family left their home in Sunheim (sic!)
Germany.
Came across the Atlantic Ocean by sail boat to New Orleans, La in the year
of 1837.
Fred went to Waco Texas.
John George, went to St. Louis Mo. a small trading post.
Charles, located in Garner, Iowa. Fred and Charles were M. E. ministers.
The two daughters located in Ill. and Iowa.
... most is right - some facts wrong.
Mr Wolfgang Müller, emigration expert, says:
- if the destination was New Orleans, then the departure at Le Havre
is very probable. It was much later when the Germans used to start
in Bremerhaven or Hamburg.
- There is an uninterrupted connection from the Rhine to Le Havre
by French channels and rivers.
- Most of the Le Havre departure ship lists got lost
in the wars of the 20th century. But there might be lists
of arrival in New Orleans.
- often the emigration didn't take place as a journey of a complete
family; instead it was a "chain emigration".
A source about emigration in the 1840es from Europe (not related to our
family and not written by one of us).
The other known facts are listed in the following chapters with
the children ...

Johann Georg aka George
Researcher: George E. (Dutch) Schupp
who is a descendant of Johann Georg.
George Schupp lives in Princeton, IN, USA.
George Schupp has researched the family of Johann Georg, especially
the descendants of Johann Georg's daughter Mary, his grandmother.
George Schupp has the written memoires of a cousin, H Burnell Schuler.
Ten pages with the recollected descendants of Johann Georg.
They are available as a zip file burnell-book.zip.
(caution: about 3Megabytes).
Extract:
John George Schuler, ... Married Maria Mets (sic!), in 1837.
...
In 1950 [1850?!], the family [Johann Georg] moved to Galena Ill. Located
on a farm in Rice township, where he lived until his death.
(-bg-): There is a woman from Kehl, born 1818-06-27 in Kehl,
Anna Maria Mätz, parents: Georg Mätz and Elisabetha Schütterlin.
This woman is not certainly the wife of Johann Georg Schuler, but
she is the only person of this name from the area of Kehl.
(In George Schupp's family tree the birth year mentioned: "1818". Source?).

A bit more information on the Charles Schuler family for which you showed
the 1880 census listing. Confirming your theory that he might have moved to
Iowa later. There is an Iowa state census record with this same family for
1895. (State censuses were sometimes taken in years between the federal
censuses, and Iowa did one in 1895.)
Iowa State Census, 1895, Hancock County, Garner Corporation

Bennie Schuler Age: 16 Birthplace: Wisconsin
Mamie Schuler Age: 19 Birthplace: Wisconsin
Edward Schuler Age: 27 Birthplace: Wisconsin
Anna Schuler Age: 24 Birthplace: Illinois
The 1880 census listing showed that son Albert was born in Iowa about 1869,
indicating that the family was also living there at that time. I found them
in the 1870 census then:
