The Schuler / Eisenbeiss Family
Daughter Salome SCHULER, married WALTER

Salome

back to family Adam Schuler

Salome Schuler, daughter of Johann Adam Schuler and Luise Eisenbeis, born 1817-09-21, married 1837-04-27 in Sundheim Johann Georg WALTER, a master baker who was born 1811-03-24 in Eckartsweier (-bg-) children: 1. born 1837-06-29 Salome WALTER (-bg- died: 1837-07-19) 2. born 1838-05-29 Elisabeth WALTER (-bg-) 3. born 1840-02-22 Salome WALTER 4. born 1841-10-09 Georg WALTER 5. Friedrich WALTER (-bg- died 1842-04-23) twins. 6. born 1844-01-01 Karl WALTER (-bg-) 7. born 1846-04-20 Friedrich WALTER (-bg-) After 1846-05-03 (christening of Friedrich) there was no record of this family found in Sundheim ...
We still don't know certainly, whether Salome Walter/Schuler ever reached the ground of the USA.
At least the trace of husband Johann Georg WALTER (see above) and of their children can be followed to the USA: www.findagrave.org shows the following information, containing exactly the same Birth Date as the Sundheim 1837 marriage record: Birth: Mar. 24, 1811 Death: Jun. 26, 1890 Burial: Forest Grove Cemetery Canton Lewis County Missouri, USA 49.1361 degrees north -91.535 degrees west Record added: Oct 14 2003 By: Lillie Riney mailto:edswoman@bytesandpcs.com Additionally there is an other gravestone record: George Walter Birth: Nov. 9, 1841 Death: Mar. 27, 1915 with only a slight error in the month of birth.
An 1860 census record shows: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cenfiles/mo/lewis/1860/pg00207.txt CENSUS YR: 1860 TERRITORY: MO COUNTY: LEWIS DIVISION: CANTON TOWNSHIP REEL NO: M653-629 PAGE NO: 210 REFERENCE: Enumerated 25 July 1860, A D Rector, Ass't Marsha 19 388 383 WALTER Geo 53 M Farmer 2,400 400 KAIL 20 388 383 WALTER Elizabeth 53 F GERMANY 21 388 383 WALTER George 18 M KAIL 22 388 383 WALTER Charles 16 M KAIL 23 388 383 WALTER Elizabeth 13 F MO 24 388 383 WALTER Caroline 9 F MO Comments: - KAIL means "Kehl" - Occupation of father George was then "farmer", not "baker". - Daughter Salome *1840 was already married and no longer member of the household (see below). - Age of father George Walter should be 49. - George has in 1860 a second wife. If we exclude the possibility of divorce, Salome Walter/Schuler has died in the meantime. - The daughter Elisabeth *1838 is not mentioned. - The son Friedrich *1846 (born in Germany!) is not mentioned - and he should still be at home in the age of fourteen.
>From the 1880 Census Canton, Lewis, Missouri; Roll: T9_699; Family History Film: 1254699; Page: 65A; Enumeration District: 27; Image: 0131. Walter, George, Sen. W M 69 Farmer Baden Baden Baden Walter, Elizabeth W F 74 keeps house Hagen Hagen Hagen Walter, Caroline W F 27 MO Hagen Hagen The next family after George Walter's is a family with the surname Eakins. Immediately after the Eakins family is the family of John Unger. Unger, John W M 38 Farmer Ger Ger Ger Unger, Caroline W F 35 Keeps house MO Ger Ger Unger, John H. W M 4 MO Ger Ger The proximity of the Ungers to the Walters is interesting, as you mention that an Elizabeth is George Walter's second wife from some time prior to 1860. Note the following database: St. Louis, Missouri Marriages, 1804-76 Name: George Walter Spouse: Elizab, Mrs Unger Marriage Date: 24 Feb 1850 Volume/Page: 04-471 This indicates that a man named George Walter marries a woman named Elizabeth Unger, who was apparently previously married. Based upon the 1880 census John's wife Elizabeth would have been 44 years old in 1850. That is old enough to be John Unger's mother. The John Unger that is two households away from the Walters in 1880 was born in 1841/1842 in Germany. John Unger is probably "Ino" Unger, listed below:
>From the 1850 Census - St. Louis, Missouri, District 82, page 952 (image 476) George Walter 40 Germany (matches Johann Georg Walter, born 1811-03-24) Elizabeth 42 Germany Lewis Unger 17 Germany Eliza Walter 12 Germany (could the Sundheim record be Eliza, daughter of Salome, born 1837-06-29?) (<--typo: born 1838-05-29) Sally Walter 10 Germany (matches Salome Walter, born 1840-02-22) George Walter 9 Germany (matches Georg Walter, born 1841-10-09) Ino Unger 8 Germany (probable match for John Unger, age 38, census) Eliza Unger 3 Missouri The combination of the 1850 and 1880 census and the St. Louis marriage records would seem to indicate that Salome died before 1850. Apparently Elizabeth Unger's first husband died between 1847 and 1849.
On the LDS site, the International Genealogy Index has the following: Husband - George Wolder OR Walter Wife - Ann Elizabeth Unger - Birth: 07 FEB 1808 Fell-Bach,Kreis,Giesen,,,Hessen Death: 03 AUG 1888 --------- Children 1. Caroline Wolder OR Walter Pedigree Birth: About JUN 1852 , , Missouri That would seem to be a match for the George and Elizabeth Walter family in the 1880 census.
According to findagrave.org John/Ino Unger's gravestone shows: John Unger Birth: Feb. 22, 1842 Death: Jul. 7, 1909 That would mean he was exactly 2 year younger than his (non biologically related) patchwork family sister Salome. His wife: Caroline: Birth: Dec. 11, 1845 Death: Nov. 26, 1922 Their son John H: John H Unger: Birth: 1876 Death: 1951
Traces for George's and Salome's son Karl aka Charlie born 1844-01-01 that could be followed (from census 1880; must be 36 years old): - a watchman in Peoria IL, wife Minnie, kids: Charles, Henry - a clerk in Philadelphia PA, wife Kate, kids: Emil, Louise, Lina, Emma Might be neither of them is right. www.findagrave.org tells about "Walter, Charles F., Canton" *1845 +1903 ??? Would be a wrong birth year.
www.findagrave.org shows 15 persons with surname "Walter" at Forest Grove Cemetery in Canton.
For George's and Elisabeth's daughter Caroline we have two possible birth dates: - 1851-03-24 (would be the 40th birthday of her father). - JUN 1852 Might be neither of them is right. Possibly Caroline married an "Albert William B(rose?)" (marriage 1881-11-01?); their second child born Canton,Lewis,MO 1886-04-16?
The following excerpt of an ancestral file on familysearch.org (that is exclusively sourced by family tradition) tells that there is a rather good knowledge about the names of the other members of the Walter family - however the birth dates are not correct: Submitter(s): IVA REIHL(K) 6903 EAST 17TH HUTCHINSON KS USA Submission: AF96-102202 Parents: Father: George WALTER (AFN: 1KL1-9XJ) Family Mother: Salome SCHULER (AFN: 1KL1-9ZQ) Children 1. Special chapter about Salome's daughter Salome (married HAHN)

On 1857-04-02 a Salome Walter married Jacob Hahn in St. Louis MO; the marriage record doesn't contain birth dates or hints on ancestors. But tradition in the family Hahn tells that Salome's mother's maiden name was "Schuler", that her father was a wealthy _baker_ in Missouri; The birth date Feb-22 of Salome is known; only the birth year is one year off (descendants Hahn say: 1839). And - last but not least - the 2nd to the 5th child Hahn were born in Canton,Lewis,MO.

One can find an other ancestral file on familysearch.org: Submitter: Barbara A. GILLAND containing the Family of the 5th Hahn child (Walter Jacob Hahn). Walter Jacob there has birth date: 1869-11-25 (!) - again one year off to the value of the REIHL submission (but: census 1900 shows 1868). Mrs Gilland seems to miss a 13th child, Dorothy *1906 of Walter Jacob Hahn, mentioned by Chris//vegasroost .
